Framed photos are an amazing way to safeguard and cherish your photos forever. But it can be a bit confusing to know exactly which ones to choose.
You can keep things simple by ordering a number of prints all in the same size and get a set of standard photo frames to match. Otherwise, it's often best to start with the frame you have or want and then order a print to match. There are a few things to look out when considering how to frame and display your beautiful photos.
Size
My photos are available as 4x6, 5x7,9x6 and 12x8 sizes (in inches). These are the only sizes available because they match the aspect ratio of my camera. You'll want to stick with these sizes for frames to avoid having to "cut off" any parts of the picture.
Style of Frame
Some frames are simply the same size as the photo that will go in them.
Other frames include a mat (the white edging) to go around the photo, so the frame size might be different from the photo size.
Other frames are collage style, and they might have a variety of sizes of photo sizes within the frame.
So rather than thinking of the size of the frame, look out for the size of the "hole" that the photo will fit in. You can find this information in the product description if buying online, or somewhere on the product label.
Orientation
Another thing to know is that printed photos come in portrait and landscape orientations. If the photo is "vertical," i.e. longer than it is wide, it is a portrait photo. If the photo is horizontal, i.e. wider than long, it is a landscape style photo.
A portrait photo (left) vs a landscape photo (right).
Some frames can go either way, but especially with matted framed and collage frames, the photo might need to be a particular orientation to work.
For example, this collage frame from Kmart can accommodate eight 4x6" photo prints. The overall frame size is 16x20," so don't be confused by that number!
There are 6 portrait style and 2 landscape style placeholders. So to use this frame, you would want to order 6 portrait (vertical) photos and 2 landscape (horizontal) photos from the print store, all in the 4x6 size.
These matted Kmart frames would also work well with my photo sizes. Again, pay attention to the "photo" size and not the frame size.

Colour
In addition to matching the photo itself, you'll want to choose frames that go with your home decor. Some retail frames at Kmart, Harvey Norman, etc. don't always have the biggest selection of colours and styles of frames as professional printing and framing services. Here is a small selection of the colours and styles available from the premium Queensberry framing service that you can order through my galleries:
What about a gallery wall?
You can buy gallery wall sets such as this, that come with an assortment of sizes and orientations. So check the description and order prints to match.
Want to avoid the hassle?
Order framed prints directly from my print store, or let me know which photo you would like printed and framed, and I will make sure the sizes and orientations (and even colours) all match to create a beautiful framed photo that's ready to go and hang on your wall. I can even make a custom gallery wall set for you, and you can preview everything before you buy.
